The Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s largest seas, covering about 970,000 square miles. It is further divided into 12 marginal seas, including the Ionian, Tyrrhenian, and Ligurian Seas. Located to the north, the Baltic Sea is considerably smaller. It covers about 149,000 square miles of European water area, bordering Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, and Germany.
