Where can you find a brewery making beer from 25,000-year-old icebergs?
If you like your beer ice cold, it doesn’t get any icier than in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Quidi Vidi Brewing Company harvests water from 25,000-year-old icebergs to brew its aptly named Iceberg lager. The icebergs in Newfoundland were formed from compacted snow, leaving tiny bubbles trapped inside and a lack of minerals found in their water. That gives the golden beer a slight fizz and a light, pure taste.

What country prohibited beer from 1915 to 1989?
Say, “Skál!” and raise a glass of beer on your next trip to Iceland — something local residents were not able to do for more than 70 years. All alcohol was banned in Iceland in 1915, with 60% of the population voting in favor of prohibition. While wine and liquor were later allowed in the 1920s and 1930s, beer was cheaper and thus thought to be easier to abuse. Beer wasn’t legalized until 1989.

Which city has a two-mile underground pipeline to transport beer?
Traveling from the bottling plant of Halve Maan — one of Belgium’s oldest operating breweries — from two miles outside of town to the city center, the world’s first legal beer pipeline is one of a kind. Built to avert the costs and inconvenience of transport trucks snaking through the city’s historic, narrow cobblestone streets, the pipeline carries 1,000 gallons of beer an hour.

What country traditionally rewarded blood donations with a pint of beer?
Until 2009, Ireland used to offer those who donated blood a refreshing pint of Guinness. The iconic stout may actually have some health benefits, which made the practice not as unusual as you’d think — Guinness contains relatively high levels of iron and antioxidants and a lower alcohol content than other beers. The practice ended after the government lowered the legal alcohol limits for driving.

What is the difference between a British pint and an American pint?
If your pint of beer seems a little larger in the U.K., you can thank the imperial measurement system. A British pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, while an American pint is 16 U.S. fluid ounces. However, even the fluid ounces differ in size between countries (imperial is 4% smaller), so after conversion, an imperial pint would be equal to about 19.2 U.S. fluid ounces.
