In 1934, businessman Robert Ilg financed a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Niles, a Chicago suburb. The tower was built to conceal the water tower that was part of a recreational park, but it has become a popular attraction in its own right. Visitors can take a tour to the top of the tower.

Located on the outskirts of Moscow, the Castle of Childhood is a replica of Neuschwanstein Castle, though in brighter pastel colors. Russian politician Pavel Grudinin built it in 2015 with a mission of making childhoods magical, and today 150 lucky schoolchildren get to attend classes there. Grudinin maintains his goal by purchasing whatever the students want for the school, from musical instruments to a carousel.

Bangladeshi filmmaker Ahsanullah Moni set out to solve a specific problem when he built a replica of the Taj Mahal in Dhaka in 2008. Most Bangladeshis couldn’t afford to see the real thing — so instead he built one for them to visit closer to home. Moni visited the real Taj Mahal six times to figure out how to replicate it.

From 1865 to 1972, Visnes, Norway — a small town with fewer than 600 residents — had a highly productive copper mine. It’s said that copper from that mine was used to build the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Visnes honors that heritage with a 13-foot-tall replica of Lady Liberty standing next to the North Sea.

At about one-third of the size of the original, Kolkata’s replica of Big Ben was completed in 2015 as part of a city beautification project. This Big Ben is 135 feet tall and has four clock faces, one for each cardinal direction. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wanted to make the city more like London, which inspired the replica.

Since 2007, Gómez Palacio, Mexico, has been home to a replica of the Eiffel Tower. It’s called La Torre Eiffel and is about one-sixth the size of the famous Parisian monument. La Torre Eiffel was a gift to the town (located about 215 miles east from Monterrey) from a group in France, spurred by businessman Christian Coller de la Marlier.

China’s exact replica of the storybook Austrian village of Hallstatt opened in Huizhou (in the southern province of Guangdong) in 2012. Inside the village, visitors can find recreations of the homes, the marketplace, the church clock tower, and the town’s charming streets. At first, residents of the real Hallstatt were displeased, but the opportunities for joint tourism were soon realized.

When the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited Rio de Janeiro in 1934 and saw the city’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue, he knew he wanted something similar to overlook Lisbon. It took decades of planning, but on May 17, 1959, Portugal’s copy, Christ the King, was inaugurated on a cliff in Almada, across the river from Lisbon.

Nashville, Tennessee, is nicknamed the “Athens of the South” — and they have the Parthenon to prove it. The city built the world’s only exact-size replica of the Greek monument for the state’s centennial celebration in 1897. It was originally meant to be temporary, but residents loved it so much that city officials converted it into a permanent structure in 1920.

The boy king of Egypt, King Tut, would feel equally at home in the afterlife in Egypt or Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Museum of Natural History has an exact replica of his tomb, complete with more than 500 artifact recreations. The replica was originally at the Luxor Hotel & Casino; it moved to the museum in 2009.
