What famous Brazilian landmark inspired a lookalike in Portugal?
When the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited Rio de Janeiro in 1934 and saw the city’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue, he knew he wanted something similar to overlook Lisbon. It took decades of planning, but on May 17, 1959, Portugal’s copy, Christ the King, was inaugurated on a cliff in Almada, across the river from Lisbon.
