Slovakia’s capital city of Bratislava borders Austria and Hungary, making it the world’s only capital to border two countries. Bratislava and Austria’s capital of Vienna are separated by only 44 miles, putting them in closer proximity than any other two national capitals in the world.

Jungholz is a town in Austria that is physically located within Germany. The strip of land that connects the city of about 300 people to its home country is technically zero meters wide — a quirk of an 1844 treaty between the two nations. Jungholz is diamond-shaped, and touches Austria only at a single point.

Feuding clans called the Border Reivers disputed an area along the English and Scottish border for roughly 300 years between the 13th and 16th centuries, without either nation taking definitive control. In the mid-16th century, the parliaments of both countries addressed the disputed territory and divided the lands with a border known as the Scots' Dike.

Ceuta and Melilla are two Spanish enclave cities that sit along the Mediterranean coast and border the African nation of Morocco. This makes Spain the only European country to share a land border with Africa. The cities cover about 12 square miles of land, and are home to a little over 160,000 people combined.

The Aegean Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean, borders Greece to the west, and the Asian segment of Turkey (known as Asia Minor or Anatolia) to the east. The Aegean Sea has an area of about 83,000 square miles. Crete, Greece’s largest island, marks the sea’s southern boundary.

Luxembourg only has about 223 miles of borders, shared with Belgium, Germany, and France. The Netherlands is bordered by Belgium and Germany. Luxembourg is a small but wealthy country that is officially the world’s last remaining Grand Duchy, meaning it is ruled by a duke or duchess.

Denmark’s only land border is with Germany to the south, but the 10-mile-long Øresund Bridge connects Denmark’s largest island of Zealand with Sweden. The bridge is named for the Øresund, a narrow strait that runs between the two countries, and sees approximately 20,000 vehicular crossings per day.

Andorra is the smallest of these nations, but it is wedged between both Spain and France. Portugal only has one land neighbor: Spain to the east. Portugal is bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The country also shares a maritime border with the African nation of Morocco.

Of France’s eight land neighbors, Monaco shares the least amount of border, with only 3.7 miles. Andorra is next with just 34 miles, followed by Luxembourg with 43 miles. Germany and Italy both share over 200 miles of border, while Spain has the greatest amount of shared French border, with 401 miles.

Finland has 830 miles of shared border with Russia, more than any other European nation. Belarus comes in second, sharing a 770-mile land border with Russia. The nation with the greatest amount of shared border with Russia worldwide is China, with roughly 2,671 miles.

Austria is a landlocked country in central Europe which borders eight other countries: Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Slovakia, and Switzerland. Croatia is found to the south of Slovenia, which itself runs along Austria’s southern border.

Germany borders nine other European countries, putting it one ahead of France and Austria for the most in Europe. Germany has a total of 2,249 miles of land borders, which are shared with Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland.

The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Europe. Countries that directly border the Baltic Sea include Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia. Though Norway and Belarus share part of the Baltic Sea’s drainage basin, they have no direct border with the Baltic Sea itself.

The French city of Marseille is located along the Gulf of Lion, which is part of the Mediterranean Sea. Situated west of the famous French Riviera, it is one of the largest port cities on the Mediterranean. Marseille is the capital of the Bouches-du-Rhône département, and the administrative and commercial capital of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Though the United Kingdom controls territories that have dozens of land neighbors, England itself only has two: Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. England is bordered to the west by the Irish Sea, to the east by the North Sea, and to the south by the English Channel.

The Chunnel, formerly known as the Channel Tunnel, is an underwater railway tunnel that links England to France. The tunnel opened in 1994, and it is the only permanent travel structure connecting the United Kingdom to the European mainland. The 31-mile tunnel runs under the English Channel at the Strait of Dover.

The Berlin Wall stood throughout the Cold War, dividing Germany into communist East and democratic West. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, and free travel was opened up between East and West Germany for the first time in almost 30 years, and in 1990, Germany officially reunified.

The third-smallest independent state in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco, San Marino shares its entire 25-mile border with Italy. The republic is located on Mount Titano, and it is crossed by the Marano and Ausa streams which flow into the Adriatic Sea to the east. The smallest independent state in Europe, Vatican City, is also entirely surrounded by Italy.

The Black Sea is located between Asia and Europe. Turkey borders its southern shores. Like Russia, Turkey is a country that spans both Europe and Asia, though 97% of its territory lies in the latter. Istanbul, Turkey’s most populous city, also straddles both continents, split in two by the Bosphorus Strait which flows from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.

The Ural Mountains run for 1,550 miles along western Russia and form a natural border between the European and Asian continents. About a quarter of Russia’s territory falls in Europe, while the rest falls in Asia. The highest point within the Ural Mountains is Mount Narodnaya, with a peak of 6,217 feet.
